Nightmare, Blooming

Courtesy of Annmarie Lockhart

An animal, not a dog, howled
outside my window.
A clawed creature, not a cat, took
possession of my bed.

And though the branches were
soft in bloom, the cherry tree
scraped its paws against
my half-opened window.

I waited for the pounce,
hoping the covers would protect
me better than the illusory
hope of this sneeze-inducing spring.
